Hydrite Chemical Co. Organic Processing Facility

The Hydrite Advanced Resin (HAR) facility is located at Hydrite Chemical’s Cottage Grove, WI organic processing plant site. Hydrite Chemical serves as the toll (contract) manufacturer for HAR in providing all manufacturing and support services in the production of HAR’s epoxy resins and other epichlorohydrin derivatives. Their adjacent organic processing plant provides a vast array of other chemistries and distillation capabilities that complement the production of the epoxy resins including pre and post processing. The site’s EHS, engineering and laboratories provide manufacturing support to HAR. The following provides an overview of Hydrite’s capabilities at this site.

Hydrite Chemical Co.’s Cottage Grove (Madison),WI facility has over 40 years experience in organic processing. The design and operation of the site meets or exceeds regulatory and industry safety and environmental standards. As a long time member of the Society of Chemical Manufacturers & Affiliates (SOCMA), the site is certified as meeting SOCMA’s ChemStewards® standards as part of Hydrite’s commitment to maintaining an injury-free workplace. Since 2004, the site has been ISO 9001:2000 certified. In support of it’s solvent recycling operations, the site also maintains an EPA “Part B” permit for the receipt, storage and processing of hazardous waste.

The operation is supported by on site safety, environmental and engineering staff which provides a high level of oversight to ensure safe and compliant operation including an extensive training regimen. New products and process changes are carefully evaluated through an integrated Management of Change and Process Safety Management Programs as well as process specific requirements.

In addition to the HAR epichlorohydrin derivatives equipment, Hydrite Chemical’s Cottage Grove site operates 5 stainless steel and 1 glass-lined reactor ranging in size of 2,750  to 12,500 gal (10,000-47,000 liter). As primarily a toll processing site, the reactors are designed with a high degree of flexibility to adapt to customer’s processes. The site has expertise in a broad range of chemistries including esterifications, polymerizations (solvent, water based, emulsions), etherfications, alkylations, aminations, amidations, acetylations and condensations.  

The facility also has a broad range of distillation capabilities including 3 batch fractional distillation columns and 3 thin film evaporators. The distillation columns utilize high-efficiency structured packing and are supported by twin-screw “dry” vacuum pumps. Combined with a proprietary heating system, Hydrite can process a broad range of temperature sensitive materials including the distillation of monomers. The thin film evaporators are also supported by separate vacuum systems and one evaporator is equipped with a distillation column for continuous rectification. Additional process equipment includes a centrifuge, blend tanks, drum/tote ovens, drum filling operations as well as a fleet of tank trucks, “yard tractors” and a truck scale.

The site is supported by an extensive Quality Assurance/Control Laboratory which is staffed 24/7. The spacious laboratory is equipped with a full range of modern analytical equipment supported by an integrated computer network. A core strength of the laboratory is a broad range of chromatography including 20 GC units including 2 with headspace capability, 4 HPLC units and a GPC unit.
